Sarah Speer, candidate for District 181 School Board

We're in this together

A community built around its kids.

My parents always said you get to help create the community you want to live in. They didn't just say it, they lived it. I want to live in a community where educating our children is the top priority.

District 181, in partnership with families and neighbors, will ensure every student achieves their individual potential, with the highest-quality programs and resources to prepare learners for an ever-changing world.

I invite you to engage in this work with me.

Background

A career in journalism, education & leadership.

My professional background spans journalism, education, marketing, and public relations, with degrees in each, including an MBA focused on strategic and corporate management. I also went back to school for a second degree to teach high school Language Arts, where I gained hands-on experience with curriculum evaluation and interconnected school systems.

I come from a family of educators and administrators who took personally the commitment to help every kid find success, knowing success looks different for every student. That grounding shapes how I show up on the Board.

Unique perspective

I'm a parent, I serve on other governing boards, and I work for an organization governed by a board. I understand fiduciary responsibility and the real financial and policy impact of decisions made at the board level.

Leadership practice

My career applies vision and strategy, workplace culture, and continuous-improvement principles every day, the same practices that translate into sound board leadership.

Educator experience

Classroom teaching taught me how curriculum, colleagues, families, and community partners fit together, and why relying on all of them benefits students most.

I gladly serve on the Brainerd Board of Education because I want to support the district, cheer on its many areas of success, help identify and address opportunities, and invest my time in something I'm passionate about, education. I see this district's dedication each day, as my own children come home from school and activities shaped by teachers who invest in them, community members who step up to coach, and a Board and administration who see the students in the numbers.

Priorities

What it takes to lead.

In my time on the Board, I've learned what skills matter most for real progress.

01

Every Student, Every Day

Championing rigorous, well-rounded programs so every learner, from kindergarten to career prep, has what they need to thrive.

02

Transparent Stewardship

Careful, honest oversight of district resources, asking hard questions and reporting back to the community that funds our schools.

03

Community Partnership

Listening to teachers, parents, and neighbors. Strong schools are built together, not in isolation.
